NYONS: 2014 Results of the National Olive Oil Competition with Protected Designation of Origin (April 24, 2014)
Despite a small harvest (less than 4,000 tons of total French production, of which about a quarter was with a protected designation of origin), 102 samples were submitted by nearly 65 participants, including mills and estates. The total number of batches represents over 366,000 liters of olive oil. Each batch was meticulously tasted by the judging panels to determine the very best.
This year, all the appellations were represented, i.e. the eight appellations now recognized in France and 10 categories were tasted: Aix en Provence in green fruity / intense taste, Corsica, Haute-Provence, Nice, Nîmes, Nyons, Provence in green fruity - intense taste, Provence in black fruity - ripened olives, Vallée des Baux-de-Provence in green fruity - intense taste and Vallée des Baux-de-Provence in black fruity - ripened olives.
Thirty-three medals were awarded, the number of medals being proportional to the number of entries submitted. The 2014 vintage is shaping up to be promising, with 14 gold medals, 17 silver medals, and 2 bronze medals distributed.
