Olive oil, the new weapon against snacking?

Olive oil, the new weapon against snacking?

It was already the star of the Cretan diet, renowned for its heart-healthy benefits! But olive oil has just revealed a major new advantage… It appears to be an excellent deterrent to snacking. This is what researchers from the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and the University of Vienna have discovered after closely examining four types of edible fats: pork fat, butter, rapeseed oil, and olive oil.

Over a three-month period, study participants consumed 500 grams of low-fat yogurt enriched with one of four types of fat daily, as part of their usual diet. "Olive oil had the greatest satiety effect," reports researcher Peter Schieberle of the University of Munich.

It shows a higher concentration of serotonin, the satiety hormone, in their blood. After eating their olive oil-flavored yogurt, the group members felt full, unlike the other groups who often needed to supplement their calorie intake throughout the day. The aromatic substances in olive oil inhibit glucose absorption, thus delaying the feeling of hunger. This discovery will hopefully lead to the commercialization of low-fat products that don't leave us feeling hungry!
